Zu, Do Yang: "Das Glasperlenspiel"
2009. 09. 16 - 10. 15

Trained as a fine major and studied painting, Zu’s photographs represent the most up-to-date trend of fine art photographs. There are some fantasies, some post production process of cutting and pasted involved, yet the development of his career can be more tangential with the development of art history than with the history of photography. He originally chose the spaces of theme park, Buddhist temple, and department store where, the artist believe, human desire, hope, and despair are interacting with each other. He then recompose his original photographs within a 360 degree round shape circle as if the viewers are forced to look into the small world of desire. In 2006, Zu was selected as one of the new talents in Kumho Art Museum, an award considered to be the most prestigious and promising in Korea.

The World Locked in a Circle, 2007

Zu Do Yang is experimenting with different kinds of Art in photograph. He has been trying to take "stereotyped image on photograph" into pieces and reconstruct it in space of "Circle" for years. But, the Circle which he shows outside is apparently not such a serious one. The Circle looks like a pretty and colorful glass bead or sometimes, looks like a planet which gleams in darkness of universe. As all kinds of questions he asks and things need to be solved is put inside of this Circle, it can be a kaleidoscope. Thus, it seems only possible to appreciate digital image of this strange circle only when we solve the magic which Zu Do Yang cast on image.
First of all, his photos are unfamiliar to viewer as it changed the traditional concept which the world is shown through familiar Rectangular frame into "Circle". But isn’t it true that camera lens itself, is originally round shape? As we are too used to add 1 more rectangular frame into original round shape to see the world, its simply strange to see it through original form. Besides, It’s completely mysterious world which is shown through pretty circle. If it’s photo image, it shall present regularity of image to viewer of world with fixed viewpoint. But these photos use not single-point perspective but multi-points perspective technique. This is a sort of contortion of perspective. Until now, both our eyes and camera are accustomed to see the world based on single point perspective but photographer tries different deviation, which look through the world in its own way. He reconstruct from all experience which he observe in different places with multi viewpoint into one space "Circle". But if we carefully think, it may be more accurate to say that human being’s visual experience is like speed of a ray, to move fast from one scene into another scene. Our eyes automatically focus on the next scene from the previous one and cognize the objects with panorama view point with overlapping new scene on top of an afterimage remained from previous scene. If what we saw just before still remain within our optic nerve and still perceptive, we delude ourselves that we are looking at current scene with previous scene together. We can say so called "a visual hallucination"….
This young photographer is also against usual practice on viewpoint through his works. Let’s try the following experiment. Close your left eye and try to see with only right eye. You can see with limited range of world. Now, open the left eye and see with two eyes. Now you can see much bigger world. Actually we only have 150 degree field of vision. If we have had another eyes in side of head and on the crown of the head, we might look ugly but we should have more fun to see the world. Zu Do Yang seems to dream similar thing. He is making a mosaic world which only can be shown through dragonfly eyes with Camera based on single point perspective.

Zu Do Yang’s works are similar with Mosaic or David Hockney’s approach in that both dismantle reality and reconstruct but there are big difference in presentation. He intends to reconstruct dismantled reality inside of one space with multi-points perspective. Thus, this is not about reality or fake. He creates one virtual space which doesn’t exist and integrates his visual experience into the circle and presents it just like a writer who expresses his artistic truth based on his own experience through novel which is made up. Therefore his camera is eyes of dragonfly, fly and grasshopper with lots of compound eyes.
